Frequently Asked Questions

See below for answers to many common queries:

What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

A dentist will mainly focus on the overall dental health of their patients.  An orthodontist specializes in using removable or fixed braces to straighten a patient's teeth.  This means we only straighten teeth here and you must continue to see your regular dentist while receiving treatment at Stewart House.

How do I become a patient at Stewart House?

For all NHS patients, we need to have a referral sent to us by your dentist. When we receive the referral, Mr Barrett will assess if your case is 'routine' or 'soon'. You will receive a letter advising you if your case is 'routine' or 'soon'. Our 'routine' waiting list currently stands at 24 months, our 'soon' waiting list is approx 4 months. If you are on the 'routine' waiting list you will receive another letter when you have reached the top of the list inviting you to call to book a consultation.

If you are under 18 years old when you are referred and Mr Barrett assesses you as qualifying under the NHS criteria, then your treatment will be covered by the NHS - even if your treatment starts or continues past your 18th Birthday.

The first step to getting an appointment at Stewart House is to talk to your dentist about a referral.

What happens if I don’t qualify for NHS treatment?

Unfortunately, not everyone qualifies for treatment under the National Health Service. During your consultation Mr Barrett will inform you if you do not qualify.  At that point, you have the choice to leave your teeth as they are or become a private patient and pay for orthodontic treatment.

Can I pay for a private assessment?

Yes, even if you are referred through the NHS you can request a private initial assessment. Please see our information on fees here.

How much will treatment cost if I pay privately?

Please click here for further information on fees.

Is there parking available while I'm at my appointment?

There is paid street parking located right in front of the building along Looms Lane and in Ram Meadow Car Park.

Do I need to continue going to my regular dentist while receiving orthodontic treatment?

Yes, it’s very important that you continue to have your teeth checked while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Teeth that are not brushed or cleaned properly will become damaged by the fixed braces.

What am I not allowed to eat while I have my braces on?

Do not eat anything that is hard or sticky.  For example do not eat: sticky toffees, chewing gum or bubble gum, french bread, spare ribs, pork scratchings, wine gums, crusty pizza bases, polo mints, popcorn, tic-tacs and no chewing your pen.
